THE IMPERATIVE OF ENERGY SAVINGS NOW THAT THERE IS INCREASE IN TARIFF CHARGE

The recent increment of electricity tariff charge has made energy saving very imperative. Improving energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective strategies household or a company can use to manage rising energy costs. Before now many household does not care about energy efficiency because most houses does not have energy meters and power is not even available. Household with meters and some level of power availability, the low energy charge have made them to careless about saving energy.                                                                                                                           With the recent increase in tariff of all category of electricity and the improvement in power availability, energy savings or energy efficiency has become the only way for household not to be so burden by this  over 45% increased. We say something is more energy efficient if it delivers same or more for less energy. Energy efficiency is simply doing more with less energy example is changing your incandescent light bulb to more efficient CFL or LED light bulb. A 5watts LED or good CFL light bulb will give you the same brightness your 40watts incandescent light bulb will give. Another example is 42inches LED Television whose power rating is 85watts against 42inches PLASMA Television that has power rating of 240watts.

Energy efficiency transcends the type of appliance we use, our behavior most time add so much to how much energy we are consuming.

For Lightning try doing the following:

·         Choosing the right type light bulbs, as we can see from the above explanations, Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) or LED use less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and equally last longer.

·         Switchig off all light when they are not in use.

·        When buying bulbs, try and check the lumens. The higher the lumens, the more light you’ll get.

·        Take advantage of free light from the sun by putting furniture near windows and we use utilize daylight as effectively as possible.

·         Turn off your light bulb during the day time.

For your Refrigerator or Freezer try doing the following:

·        Fridge or Freezer should be place away from your cooker and we are to make sure it is not in direct sunlight. Always remember that they operate more efficiently if in a cool place.

·        Do not put hot food in fridge or freezer, hot food takes more energy to cool. Rather leave your hot food out for it cool first, then put it in the fridge or freezer.

·        Try not to overfill your fridge. You should leave room for air to circulate, or your fridge will have to work harder to keep food cool thereby using more electricity. When it comes to your freezer, try to keep it full the more that’s in it, the less energy you’ll waste. Otherwise you're just cooling down air and making your fridge work much harder.

·        Make sure the fridge or freezer door seals are effective and tight. Keeping the seal clean can enhance their effectiveness. Door seals are the key to good fridge and freezers but they wear out easily, so they require constant care and attention.

 These energy saving tips is equally applicable to other electrical appliances. Energy efficient benefit to homes, office buildings and even in industries can be summarized as follows;

·        Significant Savings- Household will save significant amount of money on electricity bill. Savings can be more than half of the money being paid now. Assuming your present consumption is ₦15,000, you can reduce this to just ₦7,000 or even less.

·        Improve Reliability of appliance- Energy saving action will reduce the operating hours of most appliance these will subsequently extend the useful life.

·        Reduction of heat- This apply to household that are uses incandescent bulb, the heat dissipated out of these type of bulb add to the heat of a room.

·        Ability to plan- With energy efficient, one can monitor and keep it energy consumption steady thus mitigating against energy price volatility.

Find below the new Electricity Tariff as it apply to your area, all we have to change our altitude towards the way and manner we manage our energy.
